Age: 5 Grade: Kindergarten Ketty joined the YREADS at a Pre SIPP’s level only knowing a handful of letters in the alphabet including the sounds. Please note, English is her second language. |
Ketty has since graduated from Pre-SIPP’s to Beginner Lesson 1 which is a huge achievement. She is able to recite the alphabet and each letter sound. In addition, she is able to phonetically sound words out.
How has YREADS affected the student’s behavior and/or family life? Ketty has never had a behavior issue but her attitude towards reading and participation in class has changed to a more positive outlook. She is more eager to participate and assist in class. What is the student’s favorite book or activity to take part in at YREADS? The Pre-SIPP’s students are taught one on one and in a group setting by using flashcards and the com- |
puter to assist with letter sounds fostering their ability to be more receptive to learning. This was one of Ketty’s favorite activities since it allowed her to be interactive. She also enjoyed the group setting which enable her to work with other students and to help them and get assistance herself.
What does the student’s volunteer mentor have to say about their student? Ketty is an absolute delight to mentor. I wish more students could match her receptiveness and eagerness to participate.
